What is Empath Yoga?
EMPATH YOGA: A New Approach to Emotional Resiliency

We’ve all been hurt before, and experienced disappointment, heartbreak and loss. Without the knowledge and awareness of how important it is to let this energy move through us, rather than shutting down around it, we can let past hurts dictate our future.

Physically this shows up with a slouched posture and rounded shoulders as we collapse in on ourselves in an attempt to protect our hearts from future wounds.From the earliest age most of us have been receiving messages that it is not okay to feel anger, sadness, insecurity, fear, or any other emotion that is deemed negative. For many, this showed up in statements like “stop crying or I’ll give you a reason to cry” or “boys don’t cry”, or even “stop being so emotional.”

With these words and others, many of us were taught that anything other than happiness and joy is not valid, and so begins the guilt and shame that surrounds so many of our lives. Now, as adults, and after a lifetime of stuffing our emotions deep inside, many are brimming over with that which has remained undealt with.

Yet it still keeps calling to us, stalking our every move and nipping at our heels, waiting for us to stop long enough to allow all that we have been running from to catch up with us.This would explain why one of my new yoga clients expressed confusion as to why she couldn’t seem to relax in the evening until she had downed a bottle or more of wine. So resistant was she — like most of us — to being in the moment and risk feeling what rose to the surface, that she chose to numb out instead, and this became her nightly ritual, and the only way she could reach a pseudo-relaxed, peaceful state.

Addiction

And she’s IMG_5042-150x150not alone in her journey, as is indicated by the fact that there are 18 million alcoholics in America today, per the National Institutes of Health.

Compulsive Behaviors
This isn’t the only compulsive behavior we engage in, which is why, according to the Food Research and Action Center, 68.8% of Americans are overweight, or obese.

Insomnia

Even with these coping mechanisms, insomnia affects more than half of the U.S. population.  According to the National Sleep Foundation, with as many as 48% of adults reporting occasional insomnia, while 22% experience insomnia every or almost every night.

Anxiety

According to the book, Yoga for Anxiety, the stress is starting to show up as anxiety-related disorders, which now afflict now 1 in 5 Americans.

Depression

heart-felt-meditationBut perhaps the most alarming statistic of all is that, according to the Center for Disease Control, anti-depressants are the most prescribed drug in the U.S., more than tripling in the last ten years. This trend toward disowning what’s coming up inside is affecting us at younger and younger ages, and sadly it is pre-schoolers that are the fastest growing market. All of this points to the fact that it’s time for us to stop running away from ourselves.True emotional resiliency means giving ourselves enough credit to know we can allow ourselves to feel what we need to feel, confident that once we do, and come out on the other side of it, we will be lighter, stronger and more at ease than ever before, perhaps since we were children.
This new approach to an old issue appears to be catching on, as so many are now looking to yoga for support in quitting smoking, losing weight, and dealing with issues of insomnia, anxiety and depression.
With so much focus on our physical bodies and intellectual pursuits, there is not enough understanding of or appreciation for the importance of our emotional health. Yet it is the very energy that fuels our lives. For it is only through opening the heart and learning to feel again, that we can truly know what it means to be alive.
Now, more than ever, the world needs Empath Yoga.

Do I Have to Participate in the Showing Up Naked program first?

Yes. The Showing Up Naked retreat is considered Level I of the Empath Yoga Training, and the two are usually scheduled back to back.

Some of our participants have no plans to teach yoga, but want to learn everything they can to grow their own intuitive practice, and incorporate the principles learned into their life in a lasting way.

And others come to this training knowing they intend to teach yoga, and want to have the training and confidence to create a transformational healing experience for others through a deeply intentional, heart-opening practice.

This training is for ANYONE who is ready to MAKE A DIFFERENCE in the world.

Upon Completion of the Empath Yoga Training, Will I Be Eligible to Teach?

Upon completion of the training, participants who wish to teach are also expected to complete 10 practice classes, and a 40-day continuous, personal yoga practice.rys-sm

Empath Yoga is a 200-hour, Yoga Alliance recognized, Registered Yoga School, meaning that upon completion of all of the requirements of the program, graduates are eligible to apply for RYT, or Registered Yoga Teacher.

Is Prior Yoga Experience Necessary?

Empath Yoga is not power yoga, it is more of a moving meditation.  So it really is appropriate for everybody and every body.  That said, while we do start from the ground up — learning the fundamentals and basics of yoga and building upon that foundation to grow a truly dynamic, life-affirming practice — some prior yoga experience is recommended, especially if you have been inactive for a while.  If you are new to yoga, a basic, beginner level class (at the very least) prior to the beginning of this training is probably a good idea.

What Does A Typical Day of an Empath Yoga Training Look Like?

A typical day at an Empath Yoga Training looks something like this:
8:00 – 9:30 a.m. Yoga & Guided Meditation
9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Breakfast
10:30 – 12:30 p.m. Morning Workshop
12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Lunch
1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Afternoon workshop
3:30 – 4:00 p.m. Meditation/Break
4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Afternoon Yoga &/Or Asana Workshop
6:00 – 7:00 p.m. Dinner
7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Evening Workshop

What Materials Will I Need For This Training?

At an Empath Yoga Training, your lodging, meals, and the Empath Yoga Training manual are all included in the cost of the training. There are some additional reference materials you will want to purchase, and if possible start reading through even prior to the training, such as the following books:

Is There a Payment Plan Option?

Through PayPal’s Bill Me Later option, you can take up to six months to pay for the training in full.

However, if you need more than six months, you can apply for our extended payment plan option.  These are considered on a case by case basis.

Do You Offer Continuing Education Credits?

Empath Yoga trainings are popular with massage therapists, psychologists and mental health counselors who immediately recognize how the concepts taught will improve their PROFESSIONAL effectiveness.

The Empath Yoga Training is a QUALITY training, recognized by the State of Florida Department of Health, and National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB).  It is worth 42 CE’s for Massage Therapists.

In the midst of this crazy and often frightening world we live in it is so easy to get caught up in the whirlwind mentality…like being in the middle of a giant dust storm or a whirlpool…spinning fast..out of control..just going with whatever is told to us, thrown at us, offered to us. We forget who we are. We forget that we have the answers. We forget our true selves and most of all we forget that we are not alone, that we are all connected. Erica lovingly guides us back to who we are. She helps dig down to the root of whatever is gripping our ankles as we try to surface. She helps us remember to be true, to speak our truth and to let our light shine. It’s not always easy, not always pain free. She reminds us that to experience the unease, to experience the pain is ok — even necessary in the process of breaking through and coming back to joy, because there is, after all, joy and light underneath everything. She reminds us of the cycles that are life, that we all must experience — each one with a valuable lesson if only we allow ourselves to feel it, breathe it. Peace is within us, each of us.
